New service from Copenhagen to Porto

Portuguese airline SATA Internacional is going to open a new year-round service from Copenhagen to Porto, the second-largest city in Portugal. This will further improve connections from Copenhagen Airport to Portugal.

Only a short time after British low-cost carrier easyJet announced its new service to Lisbon, Portuguese airline SATA has announced a new service from Copenhagen to Porto in the north-western part of Portugal. SATA will start operating the new year-round service on 12 April 2012 – initially with one weekly frequency. After a short stopover in Porto, flights will continue to Ponta Delgada on the Azores, which is a popular destination for many people in Denmark.

“The new service marks the first time Porto will be served directly from the Nordic Region, which gives not only Danish passengers, but travellers from the entire Nordic Region, better access to the Portuguese mainland. We also hope the new service will help attract more visitors from Portugal to Denmark and thus increase Danish tourism revenue,” said Ole Wieth Christensen, Director of Airline Sales & Route Development for Copenhagen Airport.

The capital of port wine
“A new direct service between Copenhagen and Porto has long been at the top of our wish list. Danish travellers now have the opportunity to fly direct to all regions of Portugal, including to Madeira and the Azores. Northern Portugal has so much to offer. Porto, the capital of port wine, and the vineyards along the river Douro, will surely attract many wine enthusiasts, but the region is also known for its beautiful nature reserves, historical towns and monuments, sandy beaches and, not least, its many “Solares”, which are old manor houses offering accommodation in beautiful surroundings,” said Stig Kaspersen, head of the Tourist Information Office of Portugal in Denmark.

SATA is a Portuguese airline that has its main base in Ponta Delgada. The airline has eight Airbus A310 and A320 aircraft which are used to serve destinations in Canada, the United States and Europe. SATA already offers services between Copenhagen Airport and Madeira as well as Ponta Delgada.

The new Copenhagen-Porto/Ponta Delgada service will be operated using Airbus A320s seating 161 passengers.
