FSX/FS2004 – Sopwith Triplane Black Maria. The Sopwith Triplane was a British single seat fighter aircraft designed and manufactured by the Sopwith Aviation Company during the First World War. The Triplane became operational with the Royal Naval Air Service in early 1917 and was immediately successful. Despite its success, it has been rather poorly represented in the flight simming community. This texture is representative of “Black Maria”, flown by Raymond Collishaw. He is recorded as the second highest scoring British ace of WWI, but some reports show he could well have outscored even the Red Baron. During the war, Collishaw flew three separate Sopwith Triplanes, all called Black Maria – N5384, N5492, and N533. The last, N533 had two machine guns, causing a drastic drop in performance. This texture is the second airframe, N5492, a single gunned Triplane with the black markings Collishaws unit bore as a distinquishing characteristic.
