Crash landing: Propeller hits woman in head during Air Canada’s Jazz Aviation emergency landing

Christina Kurylo was on board an Air Canada flight from Calgary to Grande Prairie when the pilot was forced to make a crash landing in Edmonton due to malfunctioning landing gear. As the plane touched down, Kurylo got hit on the head by a propeller from the plane.

Passengers heard a bang during takeoff. The crew then announced that one of the tires from the landing gear had burst, and that the flight was being diverted to Edmonton for an emergency landing. The flight made it to Edmonton, but when the landing gear extended, passengers noticed a basketball-sized hole in one of the tires.

When the plane touched down, the landing gear collapsed. Passengers heard the plane scraping the ground, saw sparks flying and smelled burning steal. Kurylo was sitting in her seventh row seat when a propeller from the plane came crashing through her window.

“I’m really lucky,” Kurylo told Canada’s Global News, “It could have been a million times worse.”

Four passengers were hospitalized with minor injuries. Sixty-seven other passengers and four crew members were treated at the scene.
