This year Lufthansa Consulting GmbH (LCG) is celebrating 25 years as an independent Lufthansa subsidiary. The German management consultants operate worldwide, providing specialist expertise in all areas of commercial aviation and offering a range of services to airlines, airports and aviation authorities as well as to related industries and institutions.
Since its founding, the company has successfully concluded more than 2,000 projects. Lufthansa Consulting currently employs 100 full-time and freelance staff, and in addition to its headquarters in Cologne and a branch office in Frankfurt, it has an office in Moscow.
Lufthansa Consulting was set up in Cologne in 1988 as a limited company. While always focusing on developments in the aviation market, it has steadily expanded and extended the range of its consulting activities. What sets the company apart from its competitors is the way in which it supports its customers and helps them to implement solutions devised in projects. Among Lufthansa Consulting’s success factors are its activities on behalf of and in partnership with the Lufthansa Group. This involves an intensive exchange of personnel, resulting in practical, tried and tested recommendations, which are valued by customers.
In the early years, the main focus was on government-related, politically motivated projects, often in cooperation with the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation as well as the then German Society for Technical Cooperation (GTZ). In the 1990s, the company established itself as the leading aviation consultancy in the areas of restructuring and privatization, and successfully conducted major projects for airlines such as Garuda Indonesia, Philippine Airlines and Mexicana. Since 2006, greater emphasis has also been placed on airport consultancy.
The last five years have been mainly taken up with complex airline and airport projects, particularly in Africa and the Middle East. These include the company’s longstanding involvement in the privatization of airports in the Republic of Congo as well as the restructuring of Saudi Arabian Airlines. Another focal area of Lufthansa Consulting’s business activities has been the management of airline start-up projects (Camair Co / Cameroon and ECAir / Republic of Congo). The company’s involvement in Russia and in other CIS states has also been highly successful.
Since 2012 Lufthansa Consulting has had a stronger regional focus. In the so-called core markets, the managers responsible provide even greater customer proximity and specific market knowledge. There are also plans to establish local consulting offices. A dedicated team has meanwhile been assigned to the Lufthansa Group and is expanding this business area. The company is currently supporting the Group during the complex process of merging Lufthansa’s former Direct Services with Germanwings and is assisting in the reorganisation process. The consulting company is also involved in SCORE, the extensive Group-wide earnings improvement program.
“The management and staff of LCG are proud of having held their own in the face of increasingly complex challenges in the aviation industry and beyond for more than a quarter of a century. We are also continuing to provide tailor-made, individual solutions and innovative services for our customers so as to offer them a solid basis for business success, in line with our new claim ‘Your business runway’,” says Dr. Andreas Jahnke, Managing Director of Lufthansa Consulting.
