Austin-Bergstrom: Airport Improvements: 4th checkpoint to be added

Construction of a fourth concourse access and passenger screening checkpoint is expected to begin Monday night Oct. 1, 2012 at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. Having experienced passenger growth for 31 consecutive months, a temporary checkpoint is being built to help reduce security screening line waits during holidays and special events that bring increased passenger traffic during peak periods. Currently, these waits can be over 45 minutes long. The construction is taking place in the east ticketing lobby.

Construction of the new, temporary checkpoint is funded at $232,830 and is anticipated for completion by mid-November 2012. It will be operated only as TSA staffing levels allow.

Passengers in bag claim may notice construction activity as well. A project to expand the capacity of the current Customs facility is expected to begin the week of Oct. 1. The Customs expansion project is funded at $285,885 and is anticipated for completion in November 2012.
