Motorists to park and wait legally ro risk infringement

Last month, Perth Airport called on all motorists driving to the Domestic Terminals to obey the “No Stopping” road rules along Brearley Avenue.

Each year approximately 900,000 vehicles pick-up passengers at the Domestic Terminals and approximately 93% of those motorists do the right thing; however, approximately 63,000 motorists (7%) illegally park on Brearley Avenue.

“It is disappointing that motorists have continued to ignore the ‘No Stopping’ signs along Brearley Avenue”, said Brad Geatches, Chief Executive Officer, Perth Airport.

“The trend for motorists to park along the road shoulder on Brearley Avenue, as they wait to collect passengers arriving on a domestic flight, has continued despite attempts to educate the public and change this behaviour.

Perth Airport opened a Park & Wait facility in October, in response to the many complaints from motorists and cyclists about near misses due to illegally parked vehicles pulling out into traffic lanes from the road shoulder. Motorists have options to do the right thing
• all Short Term car parks at Perth Airport are free for the first 10 minutes, and
• the new Park & Wait is for people wanting to park and wait with their vehicle in a safe area for up to 90 minutes.

Profits from the gold coin entry to Park & Wait will go to childrens’ charities including the Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation and Youth Focus.

Perth Airport has worked with the City of Belmont and Main Roads WA to implement this solution, in a bid to change driver behaviour.

“A strong educational campaign has been undertaken since the Park & Wait facility opened, however, as there are still motorists that are parking illegally, the City is now going to exercise its option to infringe those motorists who are not doing the right thing” said Stuart Cole, Chief Executive Officer, City of Belmont.

“Safety is our priority, and we need to get motorists who are parking on Brearley Avenue off the road shoulder to a safe place”.

Motorists are strongly encouraged to park and wait safely when visiting the Domestic Terminals, or risk receiving a $60 parking infringement from the City of Belmont.
