B777 go around twice in unpredictable crosswind

Boeing 777 go around twice in unpredictable crosswind

Despite seeing numerous missed approaches (go arounds) and difficult landings during the storm which hit Birmingham Airport/BHX on Thursday 5th December 2013, it still came as a bit of a shock to see the two by the mighty Emirates Boeing 777.

In the first go around, the pilot experienced a windshear alarm in the cockpit just before what should have been touchdown, and re-applied full power to take the plane back into the sky. On the video, the way the 200-tonne giant is suddenly pushed to the right by an enormous gust at the crucial moment is obvious.

On the second landing attempt, the continuing turbulent crosswind persuaded the pilot to break off the approach with about a mile still to go. Sometime later he decided to give Birmingham a miss and head for London Gatwick.
