U.S. Air Force C-130s with the 145th Airlift Wing, North Carolina Air National Guard, are loaded with the U.S. Forest Service’s Modular Airborne Firefighting System II to train for the upcoming fire season.
The 145th is training with the 153rd Airlift Wing, Wyoming Air National Guard, using mountain ranges around southeast Wyoming for practice drops. The C-130s follow Forest Service aircraft, which identify release points for the water (training) or retardant (actual fire). The ForestService conducts the training for the two wings from the Wyoming Air National Guard Base, at the Cheyenne, Wyo., Regional Airport. The wings are two of the four Air Force units which fly MAFFS missions. The others incude the 302nd Airlift Wing, U.S. Air Force Reserve, in Colorado Springs, Colo., and the 146th Airlift Wing, California Air National Guard.
