FS2000/FS2002 VFR ADVENTURE - WOLLONGONG TO CANBERRA

Adventure programmer/sound recording & editing: Fermin Fernandez
Virtual Pilot Sound files/scenery: John Dow

VFR Cross Country flight from Wollongong NSW, Australia to the capital city, Canberra ACT. A second in a series of VFR navigation exercises.

FEATURES:

You have flown the Mt. Hotham Adventure with the instructor and now to continue your navigation training you are ready for another cross-country flight. This VFR flight will take you from Wollongong on the eastern seaboard of Australia to the nation's capital city - Canberra.

Wollongong is a non-controlled aerodrome with CTAF (Common Traffic Advisory Frequency) procedures in place. As you approach the Canberra area you will seek an airways clearance from Canberra Approach to enter the controlled airspace step (5500 ft) which you will reach at 20 DME Canberra - See chart

As is the case in real life, on receiving your airways clearance you can expect four different approaches (RWY 17, 35, 12 or 30) depending on the randomly assigned arrival weather - See diagram

This adventure is modelled around a Piper Warrior (VH-CGX) but any single/twin piston-engined aircraft can be used. "Dead reckoning" (deduced reckoning) and VFR navigation principles are required to track between the waypoints. This package will also come with a compilation of high-resolution mesh and landclass scenery covering the Canberra area will make VFR, map-to-ground orientation possible. Includes real background ATC and an on-board virtual pilot.

Here is a brief overview of some of the features in this ATC adventure:

  • Cross-country flight begins OCTA and enters Controlled Airspace (CTAF and CTA procedures)
  • All runways at Canberra (4) are randomly assigned depending on the weather (also random)
  • This flight is in "real time", ie. all checklist items must be performed
  • On-board virtual pilot makes the radio calls and gives timely advisories
  • Full aircraft audio checklist (Piper Warrior specific) from startup to shutdown
  • Special audio information key - CTRL + SHIFT + c = Track or Course to next waypoint
  • Special audio information key - CTRL + SHIFT + h = Heading to next waypoint (wind corrected)
  • Special audio information key - CTRL + SHIFT + e = ETA to next waypoint
  • Special audio information key - CTRL + SHIFT + d = Distance to next waypoint
  • Special audio information key - CTRL + t = Reads out the current time in two-figure format
  • ATC includes real air traffic controllers
  • Random background ATC specific to each frequency
  • Designed for FS2002 (FS2000 may also be used but compatibility not fully tested)
  • Pre-flight Briefing Document
  • Navigation charts
