File Names: Nunavut8a.zip, Nunavut8b.zip Nunavut8c.zip Nunavut8d.zip (4 Parts)

Author: Gilles Gauthier

Date of Release: December 2003

Version: 1.00

The files in this package contain a new 153m (LOD08) terrain mesh for Nunavut, Canada ( and northern part of Northwest Territories) to use with FS2002 and FS2004. The source data is GeoBase (CDED – 1 : 250 000). All data were compiled and edited in MicroDEM 7.01 alpha and resampled to LOD (Level of Details) 8, or 152.88 meters horizontal resolution, with the Microsoft Terrain Software Developer's Kit (SDK) utilities. The following sections provide informations on installation, comments, and procedures used.

Installation:

1) Extract the zipped files to a temporary directory, making sure that the "use folder names" option is enabled.

2) When the files are unzipped to the temporary directory you should see a folder, called "Nunavut8", with the standard "scenery" subfolder.

3) The "Nunavut8" folder contains this readme file, maps and a couple of screenshots of the new terrain mesh.

4) The terrain mesh .bgl and other bgl files are in the "scenery" subfolder, and labeled by a sequential number or an airport name.

Attention  FS2002 users – remove CambridgeBay.bgl, all Port_Radium*.bgl and RepulseBay.bgl.

5) Move the "Nunavut8" folder wherever you keep your add-on sceneries.

6) Activate the scenery in Flight Simulator 2004 (or FS2002) Scenery Library

Comments:

These meshes were processed in Lod08 to reduce the file size without changing the quality of the mesh in comparison with Lod09 (look Comparaison_3_3secarc.jpg, Comparaison_3_6secarc.jpg, Comparaison_3_12secarc.jpg).

The Nunavut_BGL.jpg localizes the mesh files (14). The Nunavut_relief.jpg and Nunavut_topo.jpg (Copyright Natural Resources Canada) give informations about Nunavut.

The Port_Radium_aerodrome.jpg shows the corrections modifying Port-Radium and Wekweti airports.

The Suilven_Island.jpg compares the FS2004 new mesh with a real picture.

The package contains also 41 little BGL files correcting the elevations of lakes or landscape around some airport. The Bgl name is generally the airport name.

Software Used and General Procedures:

1) Import Nunavut source data into MicroDEM/TerraBaseII 7.01 (December 2003) and convert DEM files to BSQ flat binary format. (Microdem is freeware, by Professor Peter Guth of the Oceanography Department, U.S. Naval Academy: http://www.usna.edu/Users/oceano/pguth/website/microdem.htm)

2) Use resample.exe (LOD08 – 152.88-m) from FS2002 Terrain Software Developer's Kit (SDK) freeware utilities: http://zone.msn.com/flightsim/FS02DevDeskSDK15.asp

3) Use Flight Simulator Scenery Creator, Version 1.5.11 (Derek Leung’s freeware - http://www.fssc.avsim.net/) to correct airport elevation.

4) Use Steeve Greenwood’s FSTflatten freeware (http://www.fs-traveler.com/) to correct the elevations of lakes or landscape around airports.

5) FS Screen (freeware) for in-flight screenshots.
