DIVERSION! Etihad Airways Airbus A380-861 Landing RWY 33L @ Toronto Pearson Int’l March 2, 2018Well, I never thought that I’d ever see one of these birds diverting to Toronto but today, the dream became reality. And this is how it all started:

New York got a warning in the morning for John F. Kennedy Int’l that was due to experience high winds in very rainy weather. As the day went by, several notable flights began diverting including one around 1300hrs which was an Emirates Airbus A380-861 as UAE201 which after two go-arounds, decided to divert to Toronto.

Two hours later, an Etihad Airbus A380-861 as ETD11B was doing the exact same thing, pulling a massive holding pattern and doing two go-around’s n RWY 31L. As soon as he did a RWY 31L go-around, I got a call from a friend of mine who said he heard Etihad confirm of a Toronto diversion. Well, just at that instant a friend of mine posted on our aviation group and we were off to the races!

I got to Toronto Pearson Int’l with about twenty minutes or so before the Super arrived and he called in to be assigned a RWY 33L landing. And there you have it, an Etihad Airbus A380-861 landing right in front of you. Such a cool moment to experience at Toronto!

The aircraft then taxied in and parked at Cargo West gate 501. It was supposed to takeoff at 1840hrs and head back to New York but nothing eventually happened. Presumably the flight crew timed out so nothing is confirmed yet. At the time of writing, the aircraft still currently sits there.
