Royal Canadian Air Force Lockheed CP-140 Aurora HD Close-Up Walkaround – Rockford Airfest 2014

Canada – Air Force / Canadian Forces Lockheed CP-140 Aurora (140111) (cn 258B-5741)

This aircraft is used for maritime patrol and is based on the Lockheed P-3 Orion which I have also seen many times before. The name for the aircraft comes from Aurora of mythology and also from the Aurora Borealis which shows itself often in Canada and the northern part of the North American continent.

It’s electronics is similar to the S-3 Viking in that it is used for anti-submarine warfare (ASW), but it also works maritime surveillance & counter-drug and search-and-rescue (SAR) missions. It is Canada’s only type of strategic intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) aircraft and is flown for Canadian Joint Operations Command, the RCMP and other Canadian federal government agencies.

This aircraft is pretty rare but has been photographed at a few locations worldwide including Edinburgh, South Australia YPED, Lossiemouth, Scotland, UK EGQS / LMO, Waddington, UK EGXW / WTN, Halifax Robert L Stanfield International Airport CYHZ / YHZ, Willemstad / Curacao – Hato Airport THCC / CUR, and Ottawa – MacDonald- Cartier International Airport CYOW / YOW
