Lufthansa CityLine re-certified and re-validated in recognition of successful environmental activities

Lufthansa CityLine has once again earned plaudits for its successful environmental management. Aside from renewed certification of its eco-commitment in May 2012 by the European Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS), the regional carrier has additionally been re-certified for compliance with the ISO 14001 international environmental management standard. Both certificates apply to all three Lufthansa CityLine bases in Cologne, Munich and Frankfurt. The airline was the first in the world to be recognised for its compliance with both environmental standards. It has now obtained both certificates for the fifth year in a row.

“These eco-certificates underline Lufthansa CityLine’s role as a pacemaker among European regional airlines. They illustrate again the overriding importance that we at the Lufthansa Group attach to environmental care,“noted Lufthansa Chairman and CEO Christoph Franz.

“The importance Lufthansa CityLine attaches to environmental care is undiminished. Environmental protection is a management priority at Lufthansa CityLine and a commitment shared by the entire staff,” observed Lufthansa CityLine Managing Director Stephan Klar. Co-Managing Director Klaus Froese added: “As one of Europe’s leading regional airlines, Lufthansa CityLine is committed to high quality norms. Our conviction that the pursuance of business objectives is compatible with efforts to improve protection of the environment has again been confirmed.”

An environmental regime has been firmly anchored at Lufthansa CityLine since 1999. The airline’s environmental management system encompasses all corporate areas, from aircraft maintenance and overhaul through to administration and flight operations. Continuous improvement is the paramount maxim. Aside from constant renewal of the fleet with modern and more environment-friendly aircraft, the reduction of noise and emissions are among the airline’s primary environmental objectives. Since autumn 1999, Lufthansa CityLine has replaced 35 smaller and older aircraft with 24 bigger and more environment–friendly Embraer E190/195 regional jets.
