Finnair: October 2011 Traffic Performance

In October 2011, Finnair traffic measured in Revenue Passenger Kilometres rose by approximately 9.1% as the overall capacity grew by 14.8% compared with October 2010. Asian traffic capacity measured in Available Seat Kilometres grew by 26.9% and traffic measured in Revenue Passenger Kilometres increased by 14.1%.

“In October, growth in business travel demand in Europe slowed down markedly. It is particularly alarming that the impact of global economic uncertainty has started to show in demand in Asia. Load factors declined in nearly all traffic categories due to an unstable economic situation and the overall load factor decreased by nearly 4% year-on-year”, says Finnair CFO Erno Hildén.
In leisure traffic the load factor declined by 4.2% compared with October 2010 due to overcapacity on the market. The capacity decrease in leisure traffic results mainly from the fact that from the beginning of the summer season, some of the previous leisure flights have been operated as scheduled services. The overall capacity of these flights has not changed substantially from last year.
Increasing economic uncertainty slowed growth in cargo demand and impaired load factors. Available tonne kilometres grew by 20.3% and revenue tonne kilometres by 7.4%. The amount of cargo and mail carried grew by 8.5%. The overall load factor was 68.4%.
In October, the arrival punctuality of Finnair flights was excellent: 90.8% (90.1%) of all flights arrived on schedule. In scheduled traffic, 91.9 (91.4%) of flights arrived on schedule.
