Casa 212 aircraft accident: no survivors

(WAPA) – Yesterday’s official announcement by the Indonesian authorities reported that rescue teams managed to reach the wreck of the Casa 212 aircraft operated by Nusantara Buana Air after 2 days; it had crashed Thursday in northern Sumatra, in Indonesia; the accident happened in a distant jungle area, and because of poor visibility and difficult terrain, rescuers managed to arrive only on Saturday 1 October.

Until then it was still hoped that there were survivors on board because the cabin seemed almost intact and no signs of fire were visible; more importantly, on Saturday a woman declared that she had spoken to her daughter the night before, who had called her after the incident. But when rescuers reached the aircraft, they found 18 dead bodies on board, 14 passengers and 4 crew members: “The passengers were still in their seats”, said the head of the Sunarbowo Sandi team and there was no evidence of attempts to open the tailgate.

Investigations to determine the dynamics have started, and according to first hypothesis, the main causes of the tragedy could be the bad weather conditions, considering that at the moment of impact there was a thick fog and strong wind reaching more than 30 km/h; the investigators reported that the plane suffered significant damage to the front, the wings were broken and the fuselage had a long gash; specialists assume that there could have been some survivors on board but who for various reasons – including the cold since the aircraft crashed at an altitude of over 2000 metres – could have died before the doctors’ arrival.

Victims’ families are divided between those who attribute responsibility to the government and those who denounce the delay of rescue.
